Welcome to Antelope, Oregon!

Welcome to Antelope, a town with a rich history dating back to 1870. The City was formally incorporated in 1901. Initially established as a main stage-stop between The Dalles and Canyon City, Antelope flourished in the 1920s, boasting nearly 300 residents and a vibrant array of businesses, including schools, hotels, and mercantile shops. However, adversity struck in the form of fires and the devastating 1920 flu pandemic, leading to a decline in population and economic activity.

Despite these challenges, Antelope found itself thrust into the spotlight during the 1980s with the arrival of the Rajneesh movement, which briefly transformed the town into Rajneeshpuram. This chapter in history, marked by a controversial takeover, drew national attention and continues to intrigue travelers to this day.

Today, Antelope is home to 37 residents, surrounded by generational ranching families and serves as a testament to resilience and the enduring allure of its storied past.

Today, the city is a distressed community characterized as a “near Ghost Town” and in the process of “Reawakening.” Traveling to this area you will see a gem of a community surrounded by local ranches.

In March 2024, new welcome signs were put up, replacing those that were taken down by the Rajneesh in the 1980’s.

Reawakening of the Town

Antelope was the first established United States Postal Service established in Oregon, reflecting the code 97001. To be known for “another first” the Community is actively seeking International Dark Sky designation to help share the most prized asset the City has to offer, which is “Where you can see the Milky Way from Main Street.”

The community is currently engaged in efforts to revive their community center and City Hall, formerly the Antelope School. This historic building, completed in 1925, boasts multiple classrooms, a gymnasium, and spacious gathering areas, serving as a hub for community dinners and events. With its centennial milestone approaching next year, restoration plans are underway, with the initial focus on restoring the exterior and giving the building a fresh coat of paint. Stay tuned for progress updates on this exciting project!
